Abstract

Previously, direct current motors (DCMs) were powered from the alternating grid via thyristor rectifiers. However, these traditional thyristor converters have major disadvantagessuch as (1) input alternating currents contain a lot of high order harmonics, (2) peak-to-peak ripple in output direct voltage is high, and (3) output current can only flow in one direction. PWM rectifiers can overcome the disadvantages of conventional thyristor rectifiers or thyristor converters. This paper considers the working modes of DCM in PWM rectifier-DCM system in order that we can see the advantages of this rectifier system when it was compared to the traditional thyristor rectifier-DCM system.
