Abstract

In the era of globalization, teaching English to young learners has drawn much attention from parents, teachers, educators in Vietnam and other countries. Many primary school teachers and English instructors have considered storytelling as an effective teaching resource for children starting to learn English at age 6. Storytelling promotes language learning by enriching learners’ vocabulary and acquiring new language structures and has the potential of fostering multi intelligences and learner autonomy. It also helps the child gain insight into human behavior (Dujmovic, 2006). The article details the benefits of storytelling, detailed steps to be taken into consideration before, during and after storytelling time at home and at schools. Several pedagogical implications are also suggested to help teachers and parents, as storytellers, maximize the advantages of this approach.
