SPEAKING SKILL LEARNING STRATEGIES EMPLOYED BY LEVEL A1 NON-ENGLISH MAJOR STUDENTS OF HUE UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The paper investigates speaking strategies used by level A1 non-English major students attending basic English courses at Hue University of Foreign Languages. The study employs a quantitative method approach, using a questionnaire suggested by Oxford, Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), for data collection.  The study results demonstrate that students used a wide range of learning strategies which covered the six groups of strategies, yet,  in favor of only two strategies (compensation strategy and social strategy). Low percentages of users of cognitive, metacognitive and affective strategies were found. Implications for learners and teachers are included in this paper.
