CURRENT SITUATION OF SOCIAL CONTROL ON FOOD SAFETY IN VIETNAM

Abstract

Social control on food safety plays an important role in ensuring food safety for
everyone in any society. Social control on food safety consists of two main forms: informal
control based on individual's values and formal control through the legal system. Analyzed
results from survey by questionnaires with 3172 people in 7 provinces/cities including
Hanoi, Ca Mau, An Giang, Binh Duong, Dac Lac, Thanh Hoa and Nam Dinh show that
the higher income individuals have the lower the rate of their responses to food safety
violations. Some people do not know where and how to report food safety violations. This
research raises a question for further studies about propaganda activities in the way that
each individual can easily access information about food safety
