HENRI BERGSON'S VIEW ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATTER AND SPIRIT

Abstract

Henri Bergson is associated with intuitionism and the philosophy of existence. A significant contribution to his philosophical framework is found in "Matière et mémoire", where he explores the timeless philosophical discussion on the interaction between matter and spirit. According to Bergson, the spirit possesses concealed dynamism and an innate capacity to surpass its constraints, generate more than it receives, and extend beyond its inherent abilities. While emphasising human consciousness and cognitive potential, he also acknowledges the enigmatic nature of matter, describing it as stationary yet susceptible to influence from spirit.
