Abstract

In conjunction with the national policies aimed at sustainable poverty reduction, Ho Chi Minh City has formulated and executed targeted poverty reduction programmes that are tailored to the unique circumstances of the city and its Can Gio district. The poverty alleviation efforts in Can Gio district have yielded favourable outcomes, including the elimination of homes classified as poor or near-poor based on the national poverty threshold. Additionally, there has been a significant decrease in both the number and proportion of impoverished households as per the poverty criterion set by the City. Nevertheless, this study does possess certain constraints. Can Gio remains the locality with the biggest number of households and the highest rate of impoverished households among all the districts. The district of Ho Chi Minh City has a notable deficiency in income among its impoverished population. Furthermore, these individuals face a dearth of essential social services, including but not limited to social insurance and housing. The study suggests the implementation of innovative production organisation strategies and the establishment of vocational training programmes that are closely aligned with local practises in order to foster sustained poverty reduction in Can Gio in the foreseeable future.
