MIGRATION FROM THE SOUTHWEST REGION TO THE RURAL SOUTHEAST AREAS AND PROSPECTS IN THE CURRENT DEVELOPMENT CONTEXT

Abstract

Using data from the 1989, 1999, 2009, and 2019 Censuses and from the 2022 survey of 500 households who have migrated from the Southwest region to the rural areas of five Southeast provinces, this article analyzes characteristics and predicts trends of migration flows from the Southwest region to the rural Southeast areas. Results show that the urban Southeast areas are still the main destinations of migrants from the Southwest region. Meanwhile, the rural Southeast areas are the main destinations of the households with the appearance of many migration communities from all the Southwest provinces. However, under impacts of urbanization process, the advantages of agricultural land in rural Southeast areas are decreasing. In the long term, the Central Highlands can be a potential destination due to its advantages in agricultural land, low population density and geographical distance not very far from the Southwest region.
