Abstract

Since the victory made in the year of Rooster (1789), King Quang Trung Nguyen Hue was fully aware of the importance of the diplomatic missions in ending wars, and appointed Ngo Thi Nham – a great scholar in Tay Son Dynasty - to assume those responsibilities. The artful but courageous diplomacy carried out by a true patriot was characterized in his seminal work “Bang giao hảo thoại” (Successful diplomatic negotiations) written during the process in which Vietnam was conducting diplomatic missions with Chinese Qing Dynasty. Thanks to his art in diplomacy, Ngo Thi Nham terminated the Qing Dynasty’s intention to take revenge, defeated troops from nine provinces at the northern border, and satisfied the country’s requirements. Studying Ngo Thi Nham’s diplomatic art helps us to draw precious lessons for our process of integration into the current world economy.
