DEVELOPING A READING CULTURE AMONG BUDDHIST MONKS AND NUNS IN VIETNAM BUDDHIST INSTITUTION IN HO CHI MINH CITY

Abstract

Books are considered as a teacher and a silent friend of being human. From ancient times, the ancient people considered reading books, which has brought both to learn, to understand, and to cultivate the mind. The book is a professional teacher who always quietly accompanies, teaches people many good and right things, and even things that schools have not yet taught. Therefore, it is clear that people would like to gain knowledge, wisdom, inner nourishment, success orientation and personal qualification development, one of the important ways is to read books. The study was carried out with the aim of analyzing the current situation of awareness of reading culture among Buddhist monks and nuns (BNM) at the Vietnam Buddhist Institution in Ho Chi Minh City, thereby proposing solutions to maintain and develop reading culture in BNM in particular and all readers in general. The research data were collected by questionnaire method for 162 BNM, who are studying at courses of fourteen and fifteen at the Vietnam Buddhist Institution in Ho Chi Minh City. Descriptive statistics method is mainly used in the research to find out the current situation of BNM’s perception of reading culture as well as the role of its. Research showed that BNM has a correct perception of the role of reading culture in the process of studying, and the research also shows the reasons why BNM does not spend time reading in the modern society
