Abstract

Cultural comparison is a basic research method, especially in the case where it is necessary to show the similarities and differences of an object appearing in two or many different cultures. We would like to apply this method to analyze the image of the Dragon in the culture of the two countries Vietnam – China. In the spiritual culture in both countries, "Dragon" is depicted richly and contains many meanings. This is reflected in idioms containing the image of "Dragon" in Vietnamese and Chinese cultures. Through the meanings that the Dragon is expressed in idioms of both countries, we thereby clarify the cultural characteristics, similarities and differences of the image of the "Dragon" in Vietnamese and Chinese idioms, or habits in language expression of the two peoples. Thereby, it is possible to see the similarities and differences in language, thinking and culture of Vietnamese and Chinese people. Concurrently, the study also helps to master these two types of idioms, minimize cultural misunderstandings caused by not properly understanding the image of the "Dragon" expressed through idioms. This helps a lot for Vietnamese people who are learning Chinese and Chinese people who are learning Vietnamese.
