Study on household perceptions of climate change impacts on livelihood activities in Dien Bien province

Abstract

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges to human beings, which can lead to serious impacts on production, life, and the environment on a global scale. This study has initially assessed various climate change impacts influence people's livelihoods which are weather-dependent including cultivation, husbandry, and aquaculture in Dien Bien province through people's perceptions. Results showed that most of the damage to livelihood caused by floods and cold extremes waves. Besides that droughts and hurricanes, frost, erratic rainfall and hot extremes waves were mentions. Some adaption measures were applied such as the use of tolerant varieties, agricultural diversification, improving technology, livelihood diversification. The use of these measures indicated that local people were initiatively towards the negative impacts of climate change, although adaptation measures on their own were still spontaneous and lack uniformity to not enough to prevent climate change impacts entirely. The study proposed solutions to help local people adapt and ensure livelihoods in the context of climate change.
