Study on livelihood vulnerability of coastal and mountainous communities to climate change: a case study in Quang Xuong and Quan Son districts, Thanh Hoa province
Abstract
Many studies show that coastal and mountain areas are most threatened by and vulnerable to climate change. Extreme weather and climate events are becoming more frequent and unpredictable under climate change, leading to negative impacts on socio-economic development of local communities. The livelihood vulnerability index (LVI) method was used to quantify the potential impacts of climate change on the livelihoods of communities in Quang Xuong and Quan Son districts, Thanh Hoa province. Results showed that vulnerability of study communities ranged from moderate to high. Communes with high sensitivity and adaptative capacitywere Quang Nham (S = 0.52; AC = 0.63), Quang Hai (S = 0.48; AC = 0.53) and Son Ha (S = 0.45; AC = 0.59), whereas communes with high sensitivity and low adaptative capacitywere Na Meo (S = 0.64; AC = 0.42), Quang Loi (S = 0.47; AC = 0.34) and Trung Xuan (S = 0.46; AC = 0.20)
