An analysis of the current situation of pharmacovigilance activities in some general hospitals in Vietnam

Abstract

Objectives: To assess the current practices of pharmacovigilance activities implemented in three general hospitals during the 2013 – 2018 period.

Material and Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive of the pharmacovigilance activities by IPAT (Indicator-based Pharmacovigilance Assessment Tool) from 2013 to 2018.

Results: The pharmacovigilance structures in these hospitals were heterogeneous, achieved a performance score from 6 to 11. The figure for facilities, human resources and related forms indicators were high, which achieved over 50% total performance score. Meanwhile, the implementing of that related forms and current status of research activities related to drug safety in these hospitals were still under development, which is range of 11.1% to 44.4%. The evaluation score for information and communication activities were the highest figure (100%,90.9% and 54.5% respectively).

Conclusion: The status of pharmacovigilance activities of 3 hospitals did not reach the maximum score in all 5 criteria and the implementation level was heterogeneous. In order to enhance pharmacovigilance activities, hospitals should encourage the partipation and cooperation of healthcare professionals.
