Abstract

This paper is to continue the paper tiled “Sustainable exploitation of groundwater in sand dunes along the coast of North Central region: 1. Natural groundwater resources and exploitable reserves”. The paper presents the results of another analyzing study on the water demand and capable supply of freshwater lens for domestic and production activities in sand dunes along the coast of North Central region. The findings show that, considering the whole region, exploitable groundwater reserves of freshwater lens has been able to meet water demand of domestic use for long-term manner. Concretly, with population increasing rate practiced during recent 2015-2019 period, the estimated domestic water demand of the year 2035 is of 83,598 m3/day (including 15,661 m3/day exploited for production in the region in 2017), which is still far below (31.8%) the exploitable water reserves (263,355 m3/day). That means, there will be exists 179,757 m3/day (68.2% the exploitable water reserves) available for production activities in the region. However, analyzing by each freshwater len revealed that, even no further exploitation for production, Hoang Mai – Dien Chau freshwater len would be over-exploited early 2025 – 2030 period and over-exploitation risk will be high at Nghi Xuan and Thach Ha – Cam Xuyên freshwater lens soon after 2035
