Abstract

The selection of the right criterion to select parameters in the design as well as to select the method of hydropower resource exploitation will allow to properly assess the operational efficiency of hydropower in the electricity  system. Dead water level is one of the important reservoir parameters of the hydropower station. This water level determines the energy targets and benefits of hydropower station, and the ability to participate in the electricity system and thus affecting the participation of other electricity sources. Due to a change of the electricity demand, electricity market and electricity source structure, an accordant approach should be taken to select the dead water level. The article presents the scientific basis, which provides criterion and method to select the dead water level for the long-term scheduled hydropower station in order to improve the operational efficiency of hydropower, at the same time reducing difficulty in mobilizing electricity resources of the system. The obtained results from application for Pleikrong hydropower station in Sesan rivers show the effectiveness of the methodology.
