Abstract

The friction coefficient at the trunnion bearing increases rapidly during operation of the gate due to a variety of reasons. Many serious failures have occurred in the world as well as in Vietnam due to increased bearing friction. However, there is a lack of research in Vietnam on measurement method to examine this friction coefficient. Within this research, the authors propose an empirical method for determining the friction coefficient at the trunnion bearing by analyzing the stress and strain state simulated/obtained from the numerical model. The simulated results are then validated with the one obtained from the physical model of the tainter gate in Cua Dat reservoir. The appropriate measurement procedure on site is then established.
