Abstract

Agriculture and land use are two of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 25% of the 49GtCO2 eq worldwide (IPCC 2014). This paper focuses on the assessment of the Hau Giang farmers' rice production techniques affecting the amount of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly assessment on the the potential of reducing greenhouse gas emissions when farmers change farming techniques (awareness and behavior) such as water management, usage of chemical fertilizers, and management of the rice by-products (straw). The study uses a tool to calculate Carbon Balance (EX-ACT) developed by the World Agroforestry Organization (FAO). Research results show that, if farmers apply a combination of rice cultivation techniques such as alternating wet and dry irrigation, reducing fertilizers at the recommended level and utilizing rice straw can be reduced by 10.2 tons of CO2eq per hectare per year.
