Abstract

The system of dikes and embankments has been contributing greatly to economic development, and also supporting to stabilize the lives of millions of inhabitants in the Mekong Delta. However, the system of dykes and embankments was built from the late 20th century and early 21st century, with handmade embankment technology and non-compacting bucket digger. Materials for embankment were local materials and soft soil. Therefore, after many years of working in the conditions of sunshine, rain, floods, many sections of dykes have deteriorated, subsided, collapsed, and so on. That’s no longer capable of undertaking, objectives and design tasks. Besides, floods in the Mekong Delta in recent years have had many changes, so to assess the ability of the dyke system and surrounding dikes to meet flood scenarios, this study has conducted tissue simulate three flood scenarios (flood peak water level of 4.0 m, 4.5 m and 5.09 m in Tan Chau station) by VRSAP hydraulic model on topographic map, showing the elevation of the dike crest flood zone.

Keyword: System of dykes and embankments, flood in the Mekong Delta, hydraulic mathematical model, flood scenario.
