Abstract

The assessment of flood drainage capacity as well as measures to ensure designed flood drainage capacity of a river (including the main channel and flood plain ) is always the basic contents in planning for flood prevention and control and calculations of flood drainage solutions, safety of dikes and riverbed stability.

However, up to now, the scientific basis for assessing the flood drainage capacity when considering the relationship between flood drainage capability and factors of river bed and flood plain conditions through interaction between  flood flow on the river main chammel and on the flood plain has not been seriously considered nor used in the detailed flood prevention and control planning or projects related to the management and use of river flood plain in Vietnam in general and on the system of Red and Thai Binh rivers  in particular.The contents of the research results presented in the paper has given the scientific basis  and raised the calculation requirements when considering the actual flood drainage in the river as a basis for evaluating the ability of exploitation of river flood plains with the requirements not to reduce flood drainage capacity, safety of dykes as well as stability of the riverbed.
