Abstract

The system of dykes and reservoirs on the Red river system (Vietnam) can prevent floods for 500 years, with a total flood control capacity of the reservoirs system up to 7 billion m3. In the case of floods larger than the 500-year flood, it is allowed to use part of the flood control capacity of reservoirs to participate in flood reduction for safe reservoirs and downstream areas. This paper presents the results of flood reduction calculations of the reservoir system on the Da river in the event of a dam failure using flood control capacity of Lai Chau, Son La, Hoa Binh and Ban Chat reservoirs. The results showed that the water level in Hanoi was reduced to 1.85m under the level 13.4m and maintain dyke safety with water level under 13.1m for some cases of breaking Lai Chau reservoirs.
