Abstract

The policy toward the Barbary pirate states in the Mediterranean was one of the important issues of American in the first period of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Based on historical sources, the article analyzes America's diplomatic activities in opposing the actions of the Barbary pirate states in the Mediterranean, including: (1) efforts to strengthen diplomacy with France to combat piracy; (2) Internal struggle to form a diplomatic policy with pirate states; (3) sign diplomatic treaties with pirate states to maintain peace. The research results confirm: (1) choosing a diplomatic solution to combat piracy is a suitable solution for the United States; (2) these diplomatic activities are only a temporary solution and do not completely resolve piracy in the Mediterranean; (3) diplomatic activities have impacted the United States in all aspects of fighting piracy. The research results contribute to clarifying the history of America's fight against Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean and the history of American diplomacy in the early independence period.
