Abstract

In order to meet the requirements of the 2018 general education program in Vietnam, various instructional models aimed at fostering students' competencies have been increasingly adopted in secondary schools. The design of the teaching process according to the 5E model (Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, and Evaluation) to develop students' competencies has also been applied to some extent, yet it has not gained widespread popularity. The proposed research objective is to develop a specific teaching plan following the 5E model, which can serve as a valuable reference for teachers when implementing the teaching process in the natural science curriculum for 6th grade. To achieve this goal, in this paper, we provide an overview of the theoretical framework for using the 5E model in designing the teaching process with a focus on developing students' problem-solving abilities. Subsequently, we apply this procedure to concretely design the teaching of the topic "Separation of Substances in Mixtures". Through this instructional approach, students can create products such as water and air purification devices, which can effectively address environmental pollution issues in their local communities.
