Abstract

This article presents the results of fabrication of silica (SiO2) nanoparticles with size larger than 100 nm by Stöber method from the precursor Tetraethyl octhosilicate (TEOS), (C2H5O)4-Si in ethanol solvent. Silica SiO2 nanoparticles were formed through the solgel reaction form a porous matrix. The SiO2 nanoparticles after fabrication were investigated for morphology and size through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Information about the structure of SiO2 nanoparticles was studied through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The stability of the particles in the solvent were investigated through measurement of Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Zeta potential (z). The results show that, SiO2 particles have spherical shape, uniform size, monodisper, stability in the solvent, amorphous phase structure. After fabrication, SiO2 particles with large size (~130 nm) were mixed in lubricating solution and tested in composite drilling, the results show that the fabricated SiO2 particles have many potential applications in mechanical processing.
