Abstract

Trichostrongylus spp. are roundworms that are distributed all over the world. The roundworms parasitize mainly herbivores and rodents, and can be transmitted to humans. This cross-sectional study conducted in Dak Lak province aimed to determine the prevalence of Trichostrongylus infection and its species in cattle. Examining stool samples collected from 733 cattle utilizing Sodium Nitrate Flotation techniques showed that the percentage of cattle infected with Trichostrongylus spp. was 10.36% (95% CI: 8.30 - 12.85). The results of PCR analysis and DNA sequencing showed the presence of T. axei, T. colubriformis, T. rugatus, and T. vitrines in cattle in Dak Lak province. Of these found species, T. axei, T. colubriformis, and T. vitrines are capable of transmitting to humans. Cattle breeders in Dak Lak province should pay attention to hygiene and disinfection mesures in order to reduce the risk of Trichostrongylus infection in cattle population and transmission from cows to humans.
