AN EVALUATION ON THE USE OF STUDENT ASSISSTANTS IN CLASS MANAGEMENT OF ENGLISH PREPARATORY PROGRAMS AT INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - VIETNAM NATIONAL UNIVERSITY, HANOI

Abstract

The use of teaching assistants in English classes at educational institutions has become a popular method to assist teachers and lecturers in class management to help improve the quality of English teaching and learning. However, the use of student teaching assistants at universities is still a new thing and only a few schools have applied it, including the Faculty of Applied Linguistics of International School – Vietnam National University, Hanoi. To evaluate the effectiveness of using student assistants, the study used case study by interviewing head lecturers and surveying students of the English preparatory program with  about the jobs that student assistants undertake. The results show that the most effective work is monitoring and management of students' attendance and contacting and answering students' questions outside class time. The research has also made some suggestions for lecturers and the faculty to build a more effective model of student teaching assistants at International School - Vietnam National University, Hanoi in the coming years.
