APPLICATION OF PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH OF MEDICAL STUDENTS AT THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY

Abstract

According to the Program learning outcomes of the Medical Doctor’s curriculum and the Basic competency outcomes for Medical doctor’s curriculum of the Ministry of Health for Probability and statistics subject, medical students need to be able to apply the knowledge of probability and statistics in scientific research and in the practice of medicine. Could medical students at Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy achieve this quality standard? This article aims to understand the perception, attitude and the ability to apply the knowledge of probability and statistics in scientific research and in the practice of medicine of medical students at Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy and from which to propose appropriate teaching methods. Conducting a survey with 356 medical students of course 52 at Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy on knowledge, attitudes and application of probability and statistics in scientific research and practice of medicine, the authors have collected the following results: medical students' ability to apply the knowledge of probability and statistics in scientific research and practice in medicine had been not high, most of them had been at average level. The majority of students had agreed that the knowledge of probability and statistics had been necessary very useful. However, up to 83.7% of the surveyed students said that when they study this subject, they all had studied according to the orientation of exams and tests. Finally, the authors have proposed some recommendations in teaching Probability and Statistics in order to improve the quality of training.
