Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of using stories in helping English majors at Thai Nguyen University of Education improve their speaking and listening skills. There were 46 participants who were first-year English majors from Faculty of Foreign Language Education at Thai Nguyen University of Education. The experimental research design was adopted. The participants were divided into two groups, control and experimental group, each of which had 23 students. Two data collection instruments were used, namely questionnaires and tests. The findings revealed the effectiveness of using stories in enhancing the students’ speaking and listening skills. The experimental group’s scores in the post-test were higher than those of the control group and there was a difference between the pre-test and the post-test scores within the experimental group. Moreover, the majority of the students thought stories were useful for them in learning English speaking and listening. From the findings, the author proposed some suggestions for further research on this problem.
