Abstract

Shadowing is exemplified as one of the most intuitive, highly effective ways to accelerate the progress of obtaining a greater English listening ability. It is the matter of interest to scholars. However, no research was conducted in Vietnam to examine the effect of implementing shadowing on foreign language listening ability. That is why this research aims to investigate the possible impacts of shadowing on listening comprehension improvement of the English major sophomores at Faculty of Foreign Languages - Hanoi University of Industry as well as students’ attitudes towards shadowing practice on in-class and at-home procedures. Twenty-eight students participated in a one-month experimental study, divided randomly into experimental and control groups. Data were collected from pre- and post-tests with these two student cohorts, interviews with five students from the experimental group and observations for in-class and at-home shadowing practice of this group. The research findings indicated that shadowing technique had an influence on students’ listening improvement and did receive their attitudes on practice procedures. The researchers hope to introduce a new look as well as helpful information for teachers and scholars in language teaching domain.
