Abstract

Rice straw open burning has long practiced as an inexpensive way of crop residue disposal and is used increasingly by farmers in Southeast Asia. This activity produces air pollutants, which potentially affect air quality, climate change, and human health. To conduct emission inventory and assess the impacts of rice straw open burning, the emission factors are usually used. The aim of this paper is to review the methods used for the determination of the emission factors of air pollutants from rice straw open burning including Vertical profiling method; Dispersion modelling; Atmospheric tracer technique; Carbon mass balance method; LiDAR technology; Laboratory measurement methods. Based on the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each method, the paper shows the research trend to determine the emission factors from open burning in the future.
