Abstract

The objective of this article is to explore the characteristics in the trends in Vietnamese migration from the feudal times to recent years. To achieve this target, the article analyses secondary data in the fields of demography, sociology, history, international education, and some socio-economic development policies. The results of this analysis showed that Vietnamese migration has been influenced by historical, political, and social factors on a domestic, regional, and global scale. It is concluded in the article that migration is often shaped by confluences of macro-level factors intersecting with family, employment, and personal circumstances, creating a “migration economy”. This conclusion adds nuance to understandings of interrelational aspects of migration for further research on international education and brain drain.
