Abstract

The tale of Kieu is an outstanding work of the great poet Nguyen Du. It has attracted the attention of many researchers both domestic and abroad. To shed light on The Tale of Kieu (Nguyen Du)'s own artistic values in the use of indirect speech acts, we analyzed the texts of the two works, basing on that, we compared the work of The Tale of Kieu with The tale of Kim Van Kieu (Thanh Tam Tai Nhan) through the translation version of Nguyen Duc Van and Nguyen Khac Hanh (edited by Nguyen Dang Na). Through the research process, we found that, beside the similarities because the story frames of these two works are basically the same, the differences are mainly in usage of the indirect speech acts. It is the differences in the form of expression and the role in revealing the attitude, affection of the author and the personality and qualities of the characters. Thus, the indirect use of speech acts has contributed to The tale of Kieu to have a much more unique value than the original, becoming a masterpiece not only for Vietnam but also for humanity.
