CURRENT SITUATION AND SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE ENGLISH LISTENING COMPREHENSION SKILLS AT UNIVERSITY OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY - THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to investivate the current situation and difficulties of listening comprehension; thereby it suggested solutions to improve listening skills for students. To carry out the research, the author surveyed 200 first-year students and interviewed 10 English teachers at University of Information and Communications Technology (ICTU) - Thai Nguyen University. Research results show that there are some disadvantages in teaching and learning listening comprehension skills such as: students’ background knowlesge is low, teaching and learning English at high schools does not pay attention on listening skill,   and the pre-listening activities are not really interesting and variable. The solutions recommended are using and integrating various pre-listening techniques with the consideration of student’ needs feelings and interests.
