CLINICAL AND CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND RISK FACTORS OF SEVERE PNEUMONIA IN CHILDREN FROM 2 - 36 MONTHS AT THAI NGUYEN NATIONAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objective: 1. Describe clinical and subclinical characteristics of pneumonia in children from 2 to 36 months at Thai Nguyen National Hospital; 2. To find some factors related to the severity of pneumonia in children from 2 to 36 months at Thai Nguyen National Hospital.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study.

Results: In the study 50.6% severe pneumonia, 49.4% pneumonia. Groups from 2 months to less than 12 months old 64.9%, the group from 12 to 36 months old 35.1%. Clinical symptoms: cough 98.3%, fever 64.4%, rales wet/crackles 91.4%, rapid breathing 73%. Injury on chest radiography 58.0%. The leukocyte formula with 49.4% increased the number of leukocytes ≥ 12 G/l; 1.7% with the number of leukocytes < 4 G/l. Risk factors associated with severe pneumonia were malnutrition, inadequate breastfeeding, insufficient vaccination, young age with corrected ORs of  2.5 (1.2-7.1); 2.9 (1.4-6.1); 3.9(1.8-8.7); 0.949 (0.909 – 0.991).

Conclusion: The study on 174 cases including 88 children with severe pneumonia and 86 children with pneumonia. Clinical symptoms: cough, fever, rales wet/ crackles, rapid breathing is the most popular. Photos of chest injury x-ray 58.0%. Risk factors associated with severe pneumonia were malnutrition, inadequate breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life, insufficient vaccination, young age.
