DIFFICULITIES IN PRESERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF TRADITIONAL CRAFT VILLAGES: A CASE STUDY OF TRADITIONAL CRAFT VILLAGES IN PHUC SEN COMMUNE, QUANG HOA DISTRICT, CAO BANG PROVINCE

Abstract

Traditional craft villages not only have economic significance but also are places containing the cultural identity of each community, especially in mountainous and ethnic minority areas. In recent years, socio-economic development has had an impact on the preservation and development of traditional craft villages. So, how do traditional craft villages encounter difficulties in preservation and development in the context of industrialization and modernization? This article presents and analyzes to clarify the answers using field data collected by qualitative methods (in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, directly observations) some traditional craft villages in Phuc Sen commune, Quang Hoa district, Cao Bang province. The research had fieldwork implementation in June 2022. Research results show that there were difficulties and conflicts between economic development and cultural preservation, especially in terms of environmental pollution, raw materials, labors, capital resources and support policies. Therefore, it is necessary to consider synchronous solutions for socio-economic development along with the core cultural identity of each traditional craft village.
