Abstract

Chronic myeloid leukemia is a malignancy of the blood and bone marrow that occurs in children and adults. At least four generations of therapeutic drugs have been produced and proven to be effective, but the problem of drug resistance has not been completely solved, so it is necessary to search for new drugs or new treatment modalities. Artemisia vulgaris, belonging to the daisy family, is a common medicine, growing wild in many places in Vietnam, in addition to many other Asian and European countries. A. vulgaris is commonly used in the treatment of digestive problems, vomiting, anthelmintics, malaria, etc. This study focused on evaluating the cytotoxic effects of K562 of the total and fractional extracts of A. vulgaris. The results of the study demonstrated that the total extract of A. vulgaris has the ability to inhibit the growth of the leukemia cell line K562. Specifically, the effect of the extract on the proliferation of K562 cells was dependent on the time and concentration of the extract. Also, the chloroform fraction of A. vulgaris has been shown to have many compounds that could be used to treat leukemia, but more research is needed.
