Abstract

Aedes aegypti has long been recognised as a vector of dengue virus that causes dengue fever in human. The current study was carried out to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil extracted from Perilla frutescens and evaluate its effect on the development of Aedes aegypti. The results showed that main chemical compositions of the essential oil were limonene (17.00%), perilla aldehyde (48.55%), β-caryophyllene (15.03%) and (Z,E)-α-farnesene (11.07%). The essential oil was highly effective in killing Ae. aegypti larvae, causing the mortality of 85.08% larvae treated with the essential oil at a concentration of 200µg/mL after 24 hours. The essential oil also exhibited an inhibitory effect against emergence of the Ae. aegypti pupae and adults. Further studies need to be done to effectively use Perilla frutescens essential oil in controlling mosquitoes to protect human health.
