THE IMPACT OF INDUSTRIALIZATION AND URBANIZATION ON LIVELIHOODS OF KHMER PEOPLE IN BINH PHUOC PROVINCE

Abstract

Binh Phuoc province has experienced rapid urbanization and development in recent years. Many people's lives have been directly impacted by this process, especially the Khmer. This paper examines the impact of industrialization and urbanization on the livelihood of the Khmer based on research data of fieldwork including questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews Khmer communities in Dong Xoai city and Chon Thanh district, Binh Phuoc province. The findings show that the process of developing industrial parks, industrial clusters, residential areas, and other infrastructure has created opportunities for development, created many jobs, and helped people diversify their livelihoods. However, many farmers have not found alternative sources of income, putting their families in difficult situations as a result of the process, and the local government has purchased a sizable piece of agricultural land. The research result implies that industrialization and modernization have aided community development but also pose numerous risks, particularly for farmers who have lost productive land.
