IDENTIFY SOME DIALOGUES OF CHEO MUSIC IN THE PLAY QUAN AM THI KINH
Abstract
Chèo is a storytelling stage, in which characters are described in poetic words which are rich in images, rich in tones, rhymes and rules. Singing is a means of narrative expression, a unique narrative style, and an indispensable principle in the traditional Chèo stage. In Chèo performance, before singing, characters usually have dialogues (in many ways including nói sử, nói lệch, nói vặt, nói hề, nói đếm). It is like a bridge to singing, creating a flexibility and closeness, not causing the suddenness to performers and the audience, as well as creating the aesthetics of Chèo music. One of those aesthetics is the dialogue of Chèo music. The dialogue also has many levels: direct, indirect, dramatic, whispering... And they all are harmonious and flexible between characters and characters, between musical instruments with musical instruments, especially between characters and the orchestras.... All of these create extremely unique values of Chèo music.
