Duties of Mandarins to the King under Gia Long and Minh Menh Dynasties: Inherited Values

  • Phạm Thị Thu Hiền

Abstract

Like in any other monarchy, in parallel with benefices in kind, mandarins in Gia Long and Minh Menh dynasties were significantly obligated to fulfill their duties to their king and people as well. Of utmost importance was the duty to the King as head of state. Dedication, devotion and obedience to the laws and rules of the State were essentially imposed by the two first kings of Nguyen dynasty on their mandarins. Today, such qualities have proved valuable references for setting duties of public officials and staffs.
