Abstract

Universities and academic freedom are now widely recognized as a key engine of the knowledge society and the core value for a university’s brand-building, respectively. However, the concept of academic freedom which is sometimes misunderstood as the freedom of expression is presently rife with controversy and debate in Vietnam. It is, in fact, the freedom of teachers and students to teach, study and pursue knowledge and research without unreasonable interference or restriction from law, institutional regulations or public pressure. This article overviews the issue of academic freedom in American and Japanese universities so as to indicate the positive aspects and provide some suggestions for Vietnam.
