Abstract

The diversity of ethnic groups in Myanmar (135 to be officially recognised by the government) and the existence of major religions such as Buddhism, Christianity and Islam have greatly contributed to the occurrence of ethno-religious conflicts in the country’s development history. The paper shows that the tension between Burmese Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims continues to escalate, accompanying a migration crisis thread. Buddhist
extremism and anti-Muslim sentiments could lead to an even more unpredictable situation. Hence, whether the Rohingya issue would be solved mainly depends on humanitarian efforts of the Burmese government as well as the regional and international communities.
