Abstract

Nguyễn Phúc Chu, the 6th lord out of nine Nguyen lords, is a pious man of Buddhism. During 34 years in throne (1691-1725), Lord Nguyễn Phúc Chu made many activities contributing importantly to promote this religion in Cochinchina. To understand the religious life under the reign of Lord Nguyễn Phúc Chu (during the period from the end of the XVIIth century to the beginning of XVIIIth century), besides the official historiographical works and records of the Vietnamese scholars from different sources, we can refer to the records of the foreigners who lived in Vietnam in that time. In this paper, the authors use the documents of the then very famous Chinese bonze Thích Đại Sán and of some clergymen servers, in order to have the more objective view on religious and belief life in that period.
