COLLECTION OF ENAMELLED WARES SHOWING IN THE HUẾ IMPERIAL ANTIQUITIES MUSEUM: ANTIFACTS DATING THE TITLE OF KINGS NGUYỄN DYNASTY
Huế Imperial Antiquities Museum is the oldest museum in Vietnam, officially established in 1923 under the reign of King Khải Định (1916-1925). Among many collections, the collection of enamelled wares is the ones with lots of unique values in beauty and variety in type, decoration style and function.
Enamelled wares crafting techniques were introduced from China to Vietnam in the early 19th century under the Nguyễn Dynasty (1802-1945). Depending on the different aesthetic feel of each emperor, the enamelled wares products crafted under different kings’ dynasties showed different characteristics, not only in terms of the craftsmen’s crafting techniques but also the cultural characteristics and aesthetic feel have been localized, reflecting the contemporary socio-political context as well as the style the Nguyễn Dynasty kings expressed their own identities.
These issues are discussed in the article through the introduction of enamelled wares artifacts dating the title of the King Nguyễn in the collection of the Imperial Museum of Antiquities to contribute for the study of Huế Enamelled wares under the Nguyễn Dynasty.
