Geological, geomorphological and biological diversity of Tam Giang - Bạch Mã area: the basis for building a Geological Park in Thừa Thiên Huế Province.

Abstract

Tam Giang - Bạch Mã area is known for famous landscapes of the ancient Capital of Huế with the system of Tam Giang - Cầu Hai Lagoon, the largest in Southeast Asia, and Bạch Mã National Park, which is home to many ecosystems and the diversity of flora and fauna, which is typical of two Northern and Southern climatic areas.
According to the research results, Tam Giang - Bạch Mã area has high geological diversity with has established 115 geological heritages belonging to 08 types of geological heritage listed, including: paleontology; geomorphology and landscape; ancient environment; petrography; stratigraphy; minerals; economic geology; tectonic structures and geological history. Besides, it has high biodiversity with 5.843 flora and fauna species, including 2.762 species of higher plants; 346 species of Mushroom; 347 species of Phytoplankton; 1.167 species of Vertebrates; 1.113 species of Insect; 42 species of Mollusc; 66 species of Crustacean including 223 endemic species, 191 rare species in various ecosystems ranging from forest area to the sea and lagoon.
This article introduces the geological, geomorphological and biological diversity of Tam Giang - Bạch Mã area as a basis for building a National Geological Park aims to join The Global Geological Park network.
