Study on some epidemiological characteristics of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in goat in Phonxay district, Luongphabang province, Laos

Abstract

We carried out the investigation on foot and mouth outbreak situation in goat raising at Phonxay district, Luongphabang province, Laos, in order to build up the solutions to control this epidemic. The studied results indicated that, the situation of foot and mouth disease occurred following the sinusoidal graph, suitable with the transmissible rule. There were 492 goats (out of total number of the investigated goats) infected with FMD, accounted 13.01%, of which, the female goats were infected with the highest infection rate (24.54%), followed by the goats raised for food and sucking goatlets (10.94%); male goats (5.24%). Foot and mouth disease was mostly occurred in four districts, at 94 households, of which, there were 27 households in Nambo commune, 12 households in Xopchia commune, 32 households in Houaykhing commune and 23 households in Phonthong commune. The infection time concentrated in April, May, June and July (rainy season), the disease outbreaks extended in 83 days. The above information showed that, the foot and mouth disease outbreak in goat occurred on large scale in a long time in Phonxay district, Luongphabang province, Laos.
