pplication of K.T.H improved castration pliers in comparison with Burdizzo castration pliers and other traditional techniques for bull castration

Abstract

Three bull castration methods were applied and compared at 6 Holstein Friesian (HF) cattle farms
in My Tho city, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province from 1 June 2016 to 30 August 2017. A
total of 30 HF bulls (6-8 months old) were randomly allocated in to three treatments. Each treatment
was applied with a different castration method, such as: Burdizzo castration pliers method, K.T.H
castration pliers method and castration surgery method. The studied results showed that the K.T.H
castration pliers method spent the shortest castration time (4.3 ± 0.86 minutes), without bleeding, the
scrotal sac swollen time after castration was shortest (4.5 ± 1.08 day), the recovery and pain time of
the bulls were also shortest (10.8 ± 1.14 days), and (11.8±1.14 days), respectively. The castration
cost was low, around 36,000 VND per case only and the cost of K.T.H castration pliers was equal
to half of Burdizzo pliers cost. It is considered that the K.T.H castration pliers method is the best in
comparison with other castration methods.
