Abstract

The use of antibiotics as the first treatment choice for metritis in dairy cows leads to many
significant consequences, such as the antibiotic resistance and residue of antibiotics in the milk
products. In order to find out a new substance that can be substituted for antibiotics in prophylaxis
and therapy of cow metritis, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of one drug made of
herbal plants so as to serve for the above purpose (this herbal drug was in suspension solution form
and was a product from one Viet Nam National Research Project, code: DTDL CN-52/15). The trial
result showed that use of this drug with a dose of 1ml/20kg P (equal to 10mg/kg P), for pump and
wash in intrauterine had given significant effects in the prevention, treatment of cow metritis. Firstly,
this drug had reduced the total numbers of aerobic bacteria in the vaginal mucus discharging after
delivery. In addition, the time of pink and white colour mucus discharge, as well as the total mucus
discharge time were shorter, and the metritis rate of cows after delivery was lower. Application of
herbal drugs also showed significant effects in the treatment of endometritis. One hundred percent of
the affected cows was recovered from the disease, with an average treatment time was 5.20 ± 0.96
days, (equally the time of using antibiotics). In addition, reproductive ability of cows in treatment
with herbal drugs was higher than those in treatment by antibiotics, such as after treatment by
herbal drug, 72.00 % of cows were re-ruting, of which, 55.55 % of cows were pregnant after the
first mating. Meanwhile, using antibiotic treatment had given only 64.00 % of re-ruting cows and
50.00 % of pregnant cows.
