Abstract

The study was carried out on 396 German shepherd bitches in some Northern provinces, Viet
Nam (Ha Noi, Hai Phong and Hai Duong). The studied result showed that the average prevalence of
metritis in the German shepherd bitches was 16.42%, fluctuating from 13.54% to 29.63%, depending
on the investigated locations. The infection rate of bitches with metritis increased according to their
age; the lowest rate was observed in the dogs less than 2 years old (13.46%) and the highest rate
was observed in the dogs more than 6 years old (26.78%). The infection rate of dog was also different
among the seasons, of which the higher infection rate was in summer and spring (23.95% and 21.42%)
and the lower infection rate was in autumn and winter (8.82% and 11.0%). The reproductive diseases,
including delivery difficulty, placental retention and abortion were the main causes of metritis. The
treatment of metritis, including intramuscular injection of Ovulprost, intrauterine infusion of Lugol 0.1%
and cephachlor 5%, together with using ADE, B-complex had given the high treatment efficacy.
