Current status of postgraduate education needs among fifth and sixth-year dental student at Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy, 2025

Abstract

Objective: With the aim of establishing a dental specialty training system that effectively meets the aspirations of students—focusing on the learner, and closely aligned with the current and future demands for dental care—the study. Results: Intention to work at a large-scale private dental clinic: (76.4%). Regarding the timing of pursuing specialty training, 74.3% of students reported they needed additional time to prepare before enrolling in such training, compared to only 15.5% who wanted to study immediately after graduation. The most popular specialties were Orthodontics (71.6%) and Implantology (53.4%). Preference for short-term, intensive training courses (1–3 months), with 48% of respondents favoring this option. However, postgraduate diploma courses (CK1, Residency, Master's) remained the most in-demand option, at 50.7%. In terms of financial readiness, the majority of students were willing to invest 10–20 million VND or more in a high-quality course—an impressive figure considering the average student income level. Family background factors: 47.3% of respondents reported having family members working in the medical field,  but over 50% reported no family background in healthcare, highlighting the independence and strong ambition of students.
