Abstract

Objective: To describe the side effects experienced by women using Implanon NXT® and to examine associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study using retrospective data  from women who inserted Implanon NXT® at Hai Phong University Hospital from to December 2023.   Results: The most common menstrual change was irregular bleeding (38.33% within the first 6 months), which decreased to 20% in the following 6 months. Amenorrhea was reported in 26.67%, declining to 6.67% by the end of the second year. Other commonly reported side effects included weight changes (30%), vaginal dryness (35.83%), decreased libido (17.5%), acne (15%), breast tenderness (10.83%), headache (9.17%), and insomnia (4.17%). The implant removal rate due to side effects was 83.85%, with menorrhagia or prolonged bleeding accounting for 45.45% of removals. No statistically significant associations were found between user characteristics and the occurrence of side effects. Conclusion: The incidence of side effects following Implanon NXT® insertion is relatively high but tends to decrease over time. Menstrual disturbances were the most common adverse effect, with weight gain being the most frequent non-menstrual side effect. Menstrual disorders were the leading cause of implant removal. No significant correlations were identified between user characteristics and the occurrence of side effects.
